Let's face it; there are growing numbers of multilanguage (ML) classrooms being taught secondary mathematics. My ML Algebra 1 classrooms were growing almost daily. Fortunately, I am a dually certified Math/ESOL teacher who has a plethora of resources that I can use to adjust our instructional math resources so that my students who are operating and EL levels 1-2 can access the mathematics. However, it is becoming apparent that all math teachers need to have some of these strategies at their fingertips.
Using the principals in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in multilingual classroom instructional strategies (MCIS) is an essential to providing access to (not just basic math but) grade level mathematics.
CAUTION: This is not a time to “sit and get”; this is a solution-oriented, work session. Bring your device. Only serious participants should attend.
